{"id":1112,"date":"2019-09-20T14:48:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T12:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.axiaconsulting.co.za\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2026-05-14T08:23:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T06:23:21","slug":"dos-and-donts-when-choosing-an-accountant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.axiaconsulting.co.za\/af\/dos-and-donts-when-choosing-an-accountant\/","title":{"rendered":"DO\u2019S AND DON\u2019TS WHEN CHOOSING AN ACCOUNTANT"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\">You\u2019re an entrepreneur.\u00a0 You\u2019ve started a business and now you need to contract with an accountant.\u00a0 Where do you start?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\">Or maybe you\u2019ve been operating for a while and you feel the need to change accountants.\u00a0 This is a very daunting and stressful task.\u00a0 Just thinking about what lies ahead fills you with dread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\">Choosing the right accountant is imperative, as it is the same as choosing a business partner.\u00a0 Here are a few do\u2019s and don\u2019ts, intended to provide some guidance on where to start and what to look out for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light';\"><strong>DO\u2019s<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">ask <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>for references<\/strong><\/span>. Ask your friends who they are using and whether they are satisfied with the current level of service that they are receiving.\u00a0 This is an effective way of finding an accountant, but does not always necessarily mean that you will be 100% satisfied, so some more due diligence may be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">try searching reputable online sources<\/span>.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findanaccountant.co.za\">www.findanaccountant.co.za<\/a> is just one of the websites where accountants list their services.\u00a0 Other options are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sageone.co.za\">www.sageone.co.za<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipa.co.za\">www.saipa.co.za<\/a>, to name but a few.\u00a0 The accountants listed on these websites have been vetted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">make sure your accountant is registered with a professional body<\/span>.<\/strong> Accountants who are registered with a professional body like SAICA, SAIPA, SAIBA, ACCA, etc. have been professionally assessed and have completed practical training.\u00a0 They are bound by a Code of Conduct and also have annual CPD requirements which ensure that members stay up to date with all recent changes and tax amendments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">ensure your accountant is able to provide the services that you need.<\/span><\/strong> Bookkeepers, for example, are not able to compile financial statements and handle the tax affairs of a CC or Pty.\u00a0 If you are unsure of what your accountant\u2019s designation means, you can always contact their controlling body for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">read your engagement letter.<\/span><\/strong> This is a legally binding contract between your accountant and your business.\u00a0 Ensure that all of the services that you need are specified, and that each party\u2019s rights and obligations are clearly set out.\u00a0 Make sure you are aware of any exit clauses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Do <span style=\"color: #800080;\">trust your gut.<\/span><\/strong> If after your initial meeting with the accountant, you don\u2019t feel 100% comfortable, trust your instincts.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to be just another number \u2013 you want a business partner.\u00a0 If your accountant is not available to meet with you on a monthly basis, how can they be a contributing partner to your business?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>DON\u2019Ts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Don\u2019t <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">choose the cheapest quote.<\/span><\/strong> Yes, the costs of the accounting services will and should factor into your decision, but should not be the <u>deciding<\/u> factor.\u00a0 Your main focus should be the quality of service delivery.\u00a0 You want an accountant who will help your business grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Don\u2019t <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">compare professional designations.<\/span> <\/strong>In the SME environment a CA(SA) = AGA(SA) = Professional Accountant (SA) = CCA(SA) = CBA(SA).\u00a0 Unless your business needs to be audited or independently reviewed, any of the aforementioned designations are appropriate. Yes, experience and qualifications play a role, but once again, it must be stressed that your focus should be on the quality of service delivery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri light'; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Don\u2019t <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ask your auditor to provide compilation services.<\/span><\/strong> If your business does have to be independently reviewed, or audited, your auditor cannot also compile your financial statements without proper safeguards.\u00a0 The reason for this is that the auditor has to audit the annual financial statements.
